Charities

If you are interested in donating to a nonprofit charity organization, you may first want to make sure that the organization will spend your money efficiently. If it does not, then you should search for another similar charity that will. With very few exceptions, I'll only contribute to charities which spend at least 75% of my money on the programs of interest (in other words; less than 25% on fundraising and administration).

The two nonprofit sources that I've relied on to rank charities according to efficiency and other criteria are: American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP) and Charity Navigator. I prefer the former (AIP) rankings to the latter in part because, in my opinion, a charity's ranking should not be strongly influenced by its rate of growth (or decline) or the level of cash reserves unless there is a significant problem in those areas. However, the latter (Charity Navigator) covers more charities and permits anyone to see their rankings for free.

There were some charities which I otherwise would have supported if it was not for the fact that they finance cruel experiments on animals. To find out which ones are funding inhumane animal experiments and which ones have the Humane Seal of Approval, please visit Humane Charity, which is sponsored by PCRM.

I am supporting all three of the nonprofit organizations mentioned above. I am also supporting those listed in the table below. I strongly recommend that you consider donating to one or more of them (note: clicking on the name of the charity will take you to their web site).
